CHRIS HERBERT'S STORY
On February 9, 2007, Chris, a mere 19 years old at the time, was serving in the Territorial Army in Iraq when his life took a fateful turn. His military vehicle inadvertently drove over an improvised explosive device, resulting in the loss of his leg above the knee.
Chris was suddenly thrust into a world of profound challenges. He had to embark on a journey to relearn the basics of life—walking on a prosthetic leg, adapting to his altered appearance, and navigating everyday tasks like boarding a train or getting in a car. This period marked the most significant trial of Chris' life and served as a stark reminder that things can undergo radical transformations in the blink of an eye.

Admitting that he faced considerable struggles, Chris grappled with the intricacies of balance and had to acquire new methods for performing even the most mundane tasks. Nevertheless, he was driven by an unyielding determination to 'get better' and 'get fitter' faster than anyone else, setting personal benchmarks to regain his strength and resilience. He aimed to demonstrate to the world that he possessed the same toughness as he did before the life-altering explosion.

During this challenging period, Chris received invaluable advice that has resonated with him ever since: "Left Foot, Right Foot." These simple words serve as a constant reminder whenever he confronts stress or confronts adversity. They urge him to take life one step at a time, enabling him to slow down, methodically address tasks in sequence, and prioritize self-care and mental well-being over concerns about the perceptions of the 'new Chris.' This approach allowed him to regain control of his life at a more measured pace.
Through his involvement with the charity "Toe in the Water," Chris discovered a profound sense of purpose and belonging. This experience reinforced the idea that his disability did not define his worth. Within the charity's supportive environment, Chris had the privilege of connecting with business and life mentors, who played pivotal roles in shaping his opportunities and unlocking his potential for an exciting future.
Today, Chris has transcended his past challenges and is a Client Solutions Manager for Facebook, a testament to his unyielding spirit and the transformative power of resilience and mentorship.
